Indonesia’s International Financial

Today 21 /July /2026 marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s legal and economic development. The House of Representatives has approved legislation establishing Indonesia’s International Financial Centre (IFC), reflecting the country’s ambition to build a world-class financial ecosystem capable of attracting global investment, international financial institutions, family offices, and private capital.

More than a package of fiscal incentives, the initiative represents Indonesia’s long-term vision to position itself as a competitive international financial hub. Rather than creating another conventional special economic zone, Indonesia is seeking to establish a dedicated ecosystem designed specifically for international finance.

The framework brings together several strategic elements. It introduces competitive fiscal incentives intended to attract long-term investment, while also establishing a specialised legal and regulatory environment supported by dedicated dispute resolution mechanisms for matters arising within the Centre. The government has further indicated that internationally familiar commercial practices will be incorporated where provided under the governing framework, providing greater confidence for cross-border financial transactions.

Beyond the legal framework, the initiative also seeks to facilitate the movement of international investors and financial professionals through streamlined business licensing, employment procedures, residence permits, and Golden Visa programmes. At the same time, the government has indicated that the Centre will operate within an internationally oriented business environment, including the extensive use of English and foreign currencies for international financial activities, with further details to be provided through implementing regulations.

Viewed as a whole, the International Financial Centre complements Indonesia’s broader economic transformation, including initiatives aimed at strengthening national investment capacity, supporting the development of long-term capital, and enhancing the country’s position within the global financial landscape. The vision is not limited to attracting overseas investment. It also seeks to establish a trusted financial ecosystem capable of serving both international investors and Indonesian capital within a globally competitive framework.

Much will ultimately depend on the implementing regulations and the practical operation of the Centre. Nevertheless, the establishment of the International Financial Centre represents one of the most significant institutional and legal developments in Indonesia’s modern history. If successfully implemented, it has the potential to reshape how international financial institutions, investors, and family offices engage with Indonesia for decades to come.
